Sun Jun 13 - FIFA World Cup South Africa was waiting for a game like the Germany v Australia match played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium today. The game could easily be considered a 4 star game but in fairness the Australians offered no real resistance to the slick Germans who left with a 4 – 0 victory.
Within the first 5 minutes Australia could have taken the lead from a corner kick. Germany almost got punished for their ill-advised zonal marking. After that initial scare the Germans moved the ball around, found open spaces and created chances. Australian keeper Mark Schwarzer saved a Klose shot in the 6th minute but he was powerless to keep out Podolski’s rocket in the 8th minute.
The Klose-Podolski combination kept slicing the Australian defense. Klose missed an easy chance in the 24th minute but he made up for the miss with a brave header in the 26th minute.
South Africa will play Uraguay on Wednesday June 16th while Mexico will take on France on Thursday June 17th.
It was 2 – 0 at the half and it seems like the Germans took their foot off the pedal at the start of the second half. However a red card to Australia's key man Tim Cahill in the 56th minute changed the game. Mueller scored a goal in the 68th minute and substitute Cacau added to the Australians miserable afternoon with his 70th minute goal.
Germany plays Serbia on Friday and Australia plays Ghana on Saturday.
